Vazart Coquart 82/18
Vazart-Coquart 82/18 is a complex Blanc de Blancs from the Grand Cru village of Chouilly in Côte des Blancs, one of the most prestigious areas in Champagne for wines made from Chardonnay. The wine is produced from the estate’s approximately 11 hectares of vineyards, where the vines have an average age of around 45 years. The chalk-rich subsoil typical of the Côte des Blancs gives the wine its characteristic chalky minerality, high acidity, and precise, linear structure. The estate also works with sustainable vineyard practices and high environmental certification, with vineyards moving towards fully organic cultivation.
The cuvée is made from 100% Chardonnay and is based on the house’s Réserve Perpetuelle, a perpetual reserve system that was started in 1982. Each year, part of the existing reserve is drawn off for the current cuvée and replaced with wine from the most recent harvest, typically from the first pressing. As a result, the reserve contains traces of every vintage since its creation, adding remarkable aromatic depth and complexity to the wine. In previous releases, the blend has included wines spanning several decades, contributing mature and developed nuances layered over the fresh Chardonnay fruit.
Vinification takes place primarily in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks in order to preserve the purity and precision of the fruit. Alcoholic fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation, which converts malic acid into lactic acid and results in a rounder mouthfeel. After blending, the wine is bottled for the secondary fermentation according to the Traditional Method. During this process, the wine develops its fine bubbles and then ages on the lees, creating the characteristic autolytic aromas associated with long lees aging. The champagne is disgorged with no dosage (0 g/l), placing it in the Brut Nature category and giving the wine a very dry and precise style.
In the glass, the champagne shows a fine and persistent mousse and an aromatic profile marked by citrus, lime, and green apple, combined with white flowers and a distinct chalky minerality from the terroir. Extended lees aging and the complex reserve blend add additional notes of brioche, toasted nuts, and subtle roasted nuances. On the palate, the wine is precise and vibrant, with high acidity and a pronounced mineral structure that continues into a long, dry, and almost saline finish. The result is a technically precise and terroir-driven champagne where the pure expression of Chardonnay is balanced by the depth and complexity that only a long-established perpetual reserve can provide.
